There’s an old saying about “knowing your audience,” and apparently, one American tourist learned the hard way that giving a Nazi salute in Germany is not popular or smart. Police say the tourist was beaten Saturday by a passer-by after he began giving the Nazi salute outside a cafe in the German city of Dresden.

Police said in a statement the unnamed man was leaving the cafe in a liberal part of town and a popular spot for students. According to police, the 41-year-old American was described as "severely drunk" and suffered minor injuries. The attacker fled the scene.

For those who don’t know, that salute and similar behaviors have been banned in Germany since the end of World War II.
