FBI Releases Photo Of Teddy Bear Bomb Meant To Harm Children

The FBI released shocking new details about the case of a serial bomber from South Carolina. Wesley Dallas Ayers was sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to using weapons of mass destruction. He admitted to planting three homemade bombs and three hoax-like devices between January 24 and February 24, 2018 across Anderson County. Only one person was injured by the bombs.

The FBI said that one of the bombs was designed with the intention of luring children. Ayers hid a pipe bomb filled with nails inside a box with a teddy bear and placed it in the middle of the road. A motorist called the police, who managed to disarm the bomb and safely dispose of it.

“This was deliberately placed where a child or passerby could have found it. Fortunately, someone saw it and knew to call us,” Special Agent Christopher Derrickson, a supervisor in the FBI Columbia JTTF, said in a statement.

Officials were concerned because each device they found was more sophisticated than the last and they believed it was only a matter of time before more people got hurt. Luckily, they received a tip from a member of the community and were able to locate Ayers.

“We knew based on all the evidence that he was not done deploying these devices,” Derrickson said. “If he had not been caught, there would have been more.”
