When Pedro the turtle was adopted, he was already missing one of his back legs.
And after he escaped and ran away for a few months, the box turtle was missing the other back leg.
So Pedro’s owners took him to Louisiana State University’s Veterinary Teaching hospital in Baton Rouge to see what they could do.
Vets there concluded that aside from being accident-prone, there was nothing medically wrong with Pedro, he just didn’t have any back legs.
The vets turned to an unlikely source to help the turtle get moving again: a toy store.
A zoological intern got a Lego car kit and used animal-safe epoxy to “MacGyver” a sweet rig for Pedro’s rear.
The little wheelchair they made can even be snapped off the bottom of his shell so he stays clean.
Now he can roll all over, thanks to this veterinary ingenuity.
