Senate Passes Iran War Powers Resolution Despite Trump's Opposition

Eight Republican Senators broke rank andĀ voted in favor of a War Powers ResolutionĀ that would limit PresidentĀ Donald Trump'sĀ ability to use military action against Iran. In a 55-45 vote, the Senate approved the resolution, which would require Trump to get explicit authorization from Congress in order to launch military strikes against Iranian targets.

The Senate bill was slightly different than one passed by the House of Representatives, so it will have to go back to the lower chamber to be reconciled before it makes its way to Trump's desk.

Trump hasĀ said that he will veto the billĀ and urged Republicans to kill the resolution.

"If my hands were tied, Iran would have a field day. Sends a very bad signal. The Democrats are only doing this as an attempt to embarrass the Republican Party. Don't let it happen!,"Ā he tweeted.

Congress can override a presidential veto with a 2/3 majority vote in both the House and the Senate. The last time a presidential veto was overturned was in 2016 when Congress overrode PresidentĀ Barack Obama'sĀ veto of theĀ Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act.
