A Florida bus driver is being hailed as a hero for rescuing a lost child found in the middle of a busy road.

Barbara Baker, a bus operator with the Hillsborough Transit Authority (HART) in Tampa, Florida, spotted the young boy alone and immediately stopped her bus, exited the vehicle, and brought the child safely inside. She stayed with him until local police officers arrived to reunite him with his family.

HART commended Baker for her quick thinking and compassion, describing her as a “guardian of the community.” The agency says that its operators are trained to be on the lookout for lost children as well as signs of human trafficking and other safety issues. HART’s CEO, Scott Drainville, praised Baker’s courage and attentiveness, saying her actions reflect the dedication of the organization’s team.

The incident is being held up as an example of how public transit operators play a vital role beyond transportation by protecting and serving their communities. HART says Baker’s actions show the positive impact of its employees’ commitment to the well-being of residents and visitors in Hillsborough County.
