A police officer in Atlantic City, New Jersey, recently rescued an injured dog that had fallen into frigid water near the Venice Park neighborhood. The tan and white pit bull had slipped away from animal control and still had a catch pole around its neck when it jumped into the bay. Officer Matt Schmidt saw the animal struggling to stay afloat and acted quickly to save it.
Schmidt took off his shoes and gear before jumping into the chilly water. He swam about 100 yards against the current to reach the dog. He then guided the dog back to shore while keeping it calm.
After the rescue, the dog was treated for its injuries and later reunited with its grateful owner. Officer Schmidt’s quick response was praised by witnesses and Atlantic City Police Chief James A. Sarkos called his actions extraordinary. For his part, Schmidt just says he’s glad the dog is safe.
