Gavin Newsom, governor of California, has floated the idea that every black Californian be given $ 250 thousand each. This would effectively bankrupt California. Newsome knows this and it will never happen, but he is putting it on his resume.
Newsom is running for president, and this is much like the stunt Congressmen Tim Ryan and Ro Kahana proffered, giving everyone over 16 years of age be given $ 2000 per month during Covid. Not a serious proposal but one that telegraphs empathy to voters.
If reparations could be done, what about Native Americans enslaved by Columbus, Japanese inturned during World War II. you would have to consider Native Americans enslaved by Columbus. What about land taken from Mexico in the Spanish American War.
We all understand the injustice of slavery, If you wanted to atone for this atrocity, who would get the benefit? Would it be people who have a trace of African blood? Would black millionaires get the payment? Â
Generations, far removed from slavery, would be made to pay for an injustice they had nothing to do with. A country that elected a black president and vice president is hardly racist. The stain of discrimination in America has been replaced by an enlightened society that believes in fairness for all, based on the content of their character. Reparations are unfair to the people who would be made to pay for actions of their ancestors.
