Ohio U had to be confident the game was over despite missing a free throw that would have given them a four-point lead with 7 seconds remaining. Confident until Dwayne Cohill caught the inbound pass and raced the length of the court and nailed a three which tied the game with 1.7 seconds on the scoreboard.
Too bad for YSU, the timekeeper at a home game stopped the clock. Who has reactions like that? Less than two seconds, try it, hit your stopwatch and try to stop in before 1.7 seconds goes by. He or she did, and Ohio U. called time out. They inbounded and YSU nearly caught the inbound but knocked in out of play right over Robb Schmidts head. Now Ohio U still miraculously has 1.7 seconds to score.
YSU players were doing jumping jacks in front of the inbounding Bob Cat. Somehow, he launched it over the YSU defender's head. Ohio U caught the pass and went up for a layup. YSU mostly blocked the shot, but the momentum caused the ball to lollygag on the rim, spin around the rim and look like it was going to wobble toward the O U bench when it turned back toward Robb Schmidt and fell thru the net. This happened in 1.7 seconds.
YSU crestfallen, could only look on in disbelief while O U made a team sandwich on the floor. Oh, it's still not over, the official reviewed the tape and used the gesture for it's a good basket. Nothing left to do now but turn on 93.3 to see if we could go Oh and two for the day. The Browns did not disappoint, while not mathematically out of the playoffs take note, Guardian spring training starts in about 70 days.
The YSU men lost but they are good. Consider this, they went down by 14 points in the first half shooting just 30 per cent from the field while O U knocked in 50 percent. YSU came back in the second half, tied the game and went up by 4 before trading leads the rest of the game.
The style of basketball that YSU plays will make you proud to be a Penguin. These young men are in incredibly fast. Watch for a fast break at supersonic speed and a last second pass at full speed and still make the layup.
